Elbow Pain

(Tennis Elbow and Golfer’s Elbow)

Elbow pain is often linked to repetitive strain injuries such as tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow. These conditions develop when forearm tendons become irritated from repeated motion like gripping, lifting, or swinging. The result is pain, stiffness, and weakness that can limit both work and daily life. At Silver Pain Centre in Toronto, we provide OHIP-covered consultations and advanced treatments to relieve pain, restore function, and support long-term recovery.

What is Elbow Pain (Tennis Elbow & Golfer’s Elbow)?

Elbow pain caused by repetitive strain or tendon irritation is commonly referred to as Tennis Elbow (lateral epicondylitis) or Golfer’s Elbow (medial epicondylitis). Both conditions result from overuse of the forearm muscles and tendons, leading to small tears that cause pain and stiffness. While athletes are often affected, these conditions are just as common in people who perform repetitive tasks at work or home.

Symptoms may include:

N

Pain and tenderness on the inside (golfer’s elbow) or outside (tennis elbow) of the elbow

N

Weak grip strength, difficulty holding objects

N

Morning stiffness or aching that worsens with use

N

Pain radiating into the forearm or wrist

N

Increased discomfort with gripping, twisting, or lifting

Why Does Elbow Pain Occur?

Elbow pain typically develops when tendons in the forearm are overworked or strained. Several factors can contribute to its onset:

  • Repetitive Movements: Sports (tennis, golf, baseball), typing, or manual labor put constant stress on tendons.

  • Overuse or Sudden Strain: Lifting heavy objects or repetitive gripping without rest.

  • Poor Posture or Technique: Incorrect movement patterns during activity increase tendon stress.

  • Age-Related Degeneration: Tendons naturally weaken and lose elasticity over time, making them more prone to injury.

  • Underlying Conditions: Arthritis, prior elbow injury, or neck and shoulder dysfunction can contribute to persistent elbow pain.

At Silver Pain Centre, we focus on identifying the exact source of tendon irritation and tailoring treatment to reduce pain, restore mobility, and prevent recurrence.

How We Diagnose & Treat at Silver Pain Centre

Your visit begins with a focused history and physical exam to identify the source of elbow pain. If needed, we use imaging such as ultrasound or MRI to confirm tendon damage or rule out joint issues. Then, we design a personalized treatment plan that targets both pain relief and long-term healing.

Treatment options may include:

N

Medication optimization or tapering: Safer pain control and fewer side effects

N

Corticosteroid or platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections: Reduce inflammation or stimulate tendon healing

N

Nerve blocks: Pinpoint the exact source of pain and provide targeted relief

N

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA): For persistent tendon-related pain unresponsive to conservative care

N

Image-guided procedures: Ultrasound-guided injections for accuracy and safety

N

Peripheral nerve stimulation: Option for persistent neuropathic leg pain that resists other care

N

Neuromuscular rehabilitation: Electrical stimulation, activity modification, and guided exercises to restore strength and prevent recurrence
