Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Procedure

Platelet-rich plasma is a preparation made from a small sample of a patient’s own blood, prepared at the appointment and injected by a physician using ultrasound or fluoroscopic guidance. To find out whether PRP is something to consider for your situation, start with a consultation. Consultations are covered by OHIP and do not require a referral.

Important: Health Canada has not authorized any platelet-rich plasma (PRP) products for sale in Canada as therapeutic products. The information on this page describes the PRP procedure and is provided for educational purposes only. It does not constitute a recommendation, endorsement, or claim of safety or effectiveness for any medical condition. Whether PRP is appropriate for any individual is a clinical decision made between a patient and their physician during a consultation.

What Is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)?

Platelet-rich plasma is a preparation made from a sample of a patient’s own blood. The sample is processed in a centrifuge, which separates the blood into layers. The platelet-containing layer is collected and prepared for injection. The preparation is then administered by a physician using imaging guidance.

PRP is prepared at the time of the appointment and is not a product that is purchased, stored, or supplied separately.

How the Procedure Works

At Silver Pain Centre, PRP therapy is performed in-office by experienced specialists using sterile, image-guided techniques.

Step-by-Step Process:

Blood Draw

A small sample of your blood is collected from your arm.

Centrifugation

Your blood is placed in a centrifuge, which separates the platelet-rich plasma from other blood components.

Injection

The PRP is injected directly into the area of injury or degeneration using ultrasound or fluoroscopic guidance for pinpoint accuracy. The patient is monitored briefly and typically discharged the same day. The physician will discuss any post-procedure instructions during the visit.

The full appointment typically takes 15 to 30 minutes. Aftercare instructions, including activity and follow-up timing, are provided at the appointment.
