CONDITION
Myofascial Pain Syndrome
Myofascial pain syndrome is a chronic pain condition caused by sensitive trigger points within muscles. These tight knots of muscle fiber can develop after injury, repetitive strain, or poor posture. The pain often radiates beyond the trigger point, causing aching, stiffness, or burning sensations that interfere with daily activities. At Silver Pain Centre, we provide OHIP-covered consultations and advanced treatments to release trigger points, restore mobility, and reduce muscle pain.
What is Myofascial Pain Syndrome?
Myofascial pain syndrome happens when tight bands of muscle tissue, called trigger points, develop and irritate surrounding nerves. Unlike regular muscle soreness, this pain is chronic, persistent, and can radiate into other areas of the body.
Patients often describe a deep, aching pain, stiffness, or throbbing discomfort that can make movement difficult. Trigger points may also cause referred pain, meaning discomfort is felt in areas away from the actual muscle knots. Beyond pain, this condition can lead to muscle weakness, reduced flexibility, headaches, sleep disturbances, and ongoing fatigue.
Some of the most common symptoms include:
Localized aching or burning muscle pain that does not improve with rest
Pain that spreads or radiates to nearby areas
Tender “knots” in the muscles that feel sore when pressed
Stiffness that worsens with activity or stress
Secondary effects like poor sleep, mood changes, or reduced mobility

Why Does Myofascial Pain Syndrome Occur?
Myofascial pain syndrome develops when tight muscle fibers, known as trigger points, form and irritate surrounding tissue. These trigger points can arise for many reasons and, once established, may become a persistent source of pain that worsens over time. Unlike short-term muscle soreness, myofascial pain often lingers and can spread into nearby areas, disrupting movement, sleep, and daily activities.
Some of the most common contributing factors include:
-
Muscle Injury or Overuse: Repetitive activities, sports injuries, or heavy lifting can strain muscles, creating small areas of damage that form trigger points.
-
Poor Posture & Body Mechanics: Spending long hours sitting, hunching over devices, or working in awkward positions increases muscle tension and leads to chronic strain.
-
Stress & Muscle Tension: Emotional or physical stress can cause muscles to stay tight for long periods, reducing circulation and allowing trigger points to develop.
-
Sedentary Lifestyle: Lack of regular movement weakens muscles, reduces flexibility, and encourages stiffness that can set the stage for ongoing pain.
-
Other Medical Conditions: Fibromyalgia, spinal problems, past injuries, or connective tissue disorders can worsen muscle sensitivity and make patients more prone to myofascial pain.
Left untreated, these factors reinforce each other, turning temporary strain into a cycle of chronic discomfort.

How We Diagnose & Treat at Silver Pain Centre
We begin with a thorough history and physical exam to identify trigger points. Imaging may be used if other causes need to be ruled out. From there, your personalized treatment plan may include:
Trigger Point Injections (with local anesthetic or Botox): To relax tight muscle knots.
Dry Needling or Acupuncture Techniques: To release tension and improve circulation.
Medication Optimization: Adjusting or tapering medications for safer long-term relief.
Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA): In cases where nerve involvement worsens muscle pain.
Neuromuscular Stimulation & Exercise Guidance: Restoring muscle balance, strength, and flexibility.
