Wrist & Hand Pain
(Carpal Tunnel, Arthritis)Wrist and hand pain can make the simplest tasks—like typing, driving, or gripping a coffee mug, incredibly difficult. Whether caused by repetitive strain, nerve compression, or joint degeneration, persistent pain in your extremities shouldn’t be ignored. At Silver Pain Centre, we provide OHIP-covered consultations and advanced interventional treatments to reduce inflammation, restore dexterity, and help you regain your quality of life.
What is Wrist & Hand Pain?
Wrist and hand pain involves discomfort, stiffness, or sensory changes in the joints, tendons, and nerves connecting the forearm to the fingertips. Because the hand is a complex structure of 27 bones and numerous small muscles, pain in this area is often multifunctional.
Common symptoms include:
Numbness, tingling, or "pins and needles" (especially in the thumb and first three fingers).
Aching or sharp pain in the wrist that may radiate up the arm.
Weakness in the hand or a tendency to drop objects.
Stiffness in the finger joints, particularly in the morning.
Swelling or visible "knots" (ganglion cysts) around the wrist or knuckles.
Why Does Wrist & Hand Pain Occur?
Hand and wrist issues often stem from repetitive motion, sudden injury, or chronic inflammatory conditions.
-
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: Compression of the median nerve in the wrist, leading to numbness and hand weakness.
-
Arthritis (Osteoarthritis or Rheumatoid): Wear and tear of cartilage in the small joints of the fingers or the base of the thumb.
-
De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis: Inflammation of the tendons at the base of the thumb, causing pain with wrist rotation.
-
Trigger Finger: Inflammation of the tendon sheath that causes a finger to get “stuck” in a bent position.
-
Ganglion Cysts: Non-cancerous fluid-filled lumps that can put pressure on nerves.
-
Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI): Chronic overuse from typing, manual labor, or sports.
How We Diagnose & Treat at Silver Pain Centre
Effective treatment starts with pinpointing the exact source of nerve or joint irritation. Our diagnostic process includes physical provocative testing and, if necessary, image-guided diagnostics. Your personalized plan may include:
Medication Optimization: Tailored topical or oral anti-inflammatories to manage symptoms locally.
Corticosteroid Injections: Targeted relief for arthritic joints or inflamed tendon sheaths (Trigger Finger/De Quervain’s).
Image-Guided Nerve Blocks: Precision numbing of nerves to provide immediate relief for chronic wrist pain.
Carpal Tunnel Injections: Ultrasound-guided injections to reduce swelling around the median nerve.
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP): Using your body’s own growth factors to support the healing of chronic ligament or tendon strains.
Bracing & Ergonomic Guidance: Recommendations to protect the joint during the healing process.
