Pelvic Pain
(Male & Female)Chronic pelvic pain is a complex and often isolating condition that affects both men and women. Because the pelvic region houses vital reproductive, urinary, and digestive organs, pain here can be difficult to pinpoint and even harder to discuss. Whether it is a persistent dull ache or sharp, episodic cramping, pelvic pain can disrupt your intimate life, exercise routine, and emotional well-being. At Silver Pain Centre, we provide OHIP-covered consultations and specialized interventional treatments to address the nerve and muscular roots of pelvic discomfort, helping you regain control and comfort.
What is Pelvic Pain?
Pelvic pain refers to discomfort occurring below the belly button and between the hips that lasts for six months or longer. It often involves a “cross-talk” between the nerves, muscles, and organs in the pelvic floor, leading to pain that may feel generalized or highly localized.
Common symptoms include:
Constant or intermittent pain in the lower abdomen or pelvis.
Sharp, stabbing, or "electric" sensations in the groin or genital area.
Pain during or after sexual intercourse (Dyspareunia).
Discomfort that worsens with prolonged sitting or during bowel movements.
A heavy or "pressure" sensation in the pelvic floor.
Why Does Pelvic Pain Occur?
The pelvic region is a high-traffic area for nerves and muscles. When these systems become hyper-sensitive or inflamed, chronic pain cycles begin. Common causes include:
-
Pudendal Neuralgia: Compression or irritation of the pudendal nerve, often causing pain that worsens when sitting.
-
Pelvic Floor Dysfunction: Inability to correctly relax and coordinate the muscles in the pelvic floor to urinate or have bowel movements.
-
Endometriosis or Adenomyosis: (Female) Tissue similar to the uterine lining growing outside the uterus, causing severe inflammatory pain.
-
Chronic Prostatitis / CPPS: (Male) Long-term pelvic pain and urinary tract symptoms without evidence of a bacterial infection.
-
Interstital Cystitis: A chronic condition causing bladder pressure and pelvic pain.
-
Post-Surgical Pain: Nerve entrapment or scar tissue formation following hernia repair, hysterectomy, or pelvic surgery.
How We Diagnose & Treat at Silver Pain Centre
Diagnosing pelvic pain requires a sensitive, multidisciplinary approach. Our specialists look beyond the surface to identify the neurological and musculoskeletal triggers. Your personalized treatment plan may include:
Medication Optimization: Tailored prescriptions to calm overactive nerves and reduce localized pelvic inflammation.
Pudendal Nerve Blocks: Precise, image-guided injections to "reset" the main nerve responsible for pelvic sensation.
Trigger Point Injections: Targeted therapy into the pelvic floor or abdominal muscles to release painful muscle knots.
Ganglion Impar Blocks: An advanced injection technique used to treat chronic pain in the "tailbone" or perineal area.
Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA): Using thermal energy to interrupt pain signals from specific nerves in the pelvic region.
Sympathetic Nerve Blocks: Targeting the autonomic nerves to reduce visceral (organ-based) pelvic pain.
