Peripheral Neuropathy

Peripheral Neuropathy is a condition caused by damage or dysfunction of the peripheral nerves, the nerves that carry signals between the brain and spinal cord and the rest of the body. It most commonly affects the feet and hands, but it can also involve the legs, arms, and other areas. Symptoms can range from mild tingling to severe burning pain, numbness, and balance issues that affect daily life. At Silver Pain Centre, we provide OHIP-covered consultations and specialized interventional treatments to help identify contributing factors, reduce nerve-related pain, and support safer movement and function.

What is Peripheral Neuropathy?

Peripheral Neuropathy occurs when peripheral nerves become damaged or irritated and begin sending abnormal signals. This can lead to pain, altered sensation, weakness, and changes in temperature perception. Some people experience mostly numbness, while others have intense burning pain. Symptoms may be symmetrical, affecting both feet or both hands, and they often progress gradually over time.

Common symptoms include:

N

Tingling, pins and needles, or numbness in the feet or hands.

N

Burning pain, stabbing pain, or electric shock sensations.

N

Reduced ability to feel temperature changes, pain, or touch.

N

Increased sensitivity, where light touch or socks can feel painful.

N

Balance issues, unsteadiness, or frequent tripping. Muscle weakness or cramping depending on the nerves involved.

Why Does Peripheral Neuropathy Occur?

Peripheral Neuropathy can develop from a wide range of medical, metabolic, and mechanical causes. Identifying contributing factors is important because it helps guide treatment and reduce progression.

Common causes include:

  • Diabetes and Prediabetes: One of the most common causes of peripheral nerve damage, often starting in the feet.

  • Vitamin Deficiencies: Especially vitamin B12 and other nutrients needed for nerve health.

  • Medication Effects: Certain medications, including some chemotherapy agents, can damage peripheral nerves.

  • Alcohol Use and Liver Disease: Long-term alcohol exposure can contribute to nutritional deficiency and nerve injury.

  • Thyroid Disorders: Metabolic changes can affect nerve function and cause neuropathic symptoms.

  • Nerve Compression or Entrapment: Conditions such as tarsal tunnel syndrome, carpal tunnel syndrome, or nerve irritation from spine problems can mimic or worsen neuropathy.

  • Autoimmune and Inflammatory Conditions: Some immune conditions can trigger nerve inflammation and damage.

  • Idiopathic Neuropathy: In some cases, a clear cause is not identified even after thorough evaluation.

How We Diagnose & Treat at Silver Pain Centre

Peripheral Neuropathy requires an individualized approach because symptoms, causes, and nerve involvement vary widely. Our specialists assess your history, symptom pattern, functional impact, and contributing medical factors, then create a treatment plan aimed at improving comfort and daily function.

Your personalized treatment plan may include:

N

Medication Optimization: Targeted nerve pain medications to reduce burning, shooting pain, and nerve sensitization where appropriate.

N

Nerve Blocks: Image-guided injections used in select cases when a specific nerve distribution is involved and pain is focal or entrapment-related.

N

Neuromodulation Options: Advanced treatments that help interrupt pain signaling for chronic, treatment-resistant neuropathic pain when appropriate.

N

Trigger Point Injections: When muscle guarding and secondary pain develop due to altered gait or protective movement.

N

Functional Support and Safety Guidance: Practical recommendations to reduce falls risk, improve stability, and support daily movement.

N

Collaborative Care Planning: Coordination with your primary care provider and relevant specialists when further investigation or medical management is needed.
