Cancer-Related Pain
(Palliative Pain Care)Cancer-related pain can result from the disease itself, its treatment, or both. Silver Pain Centre offers specialized, OHIP-covered palliative pain management to improve comfort and quality of life for patients living with cancer-related pain.
What Is Cancer-Related Pain?
Cancer-related pain encompasses the various types of pain experienced by patients as a result of cancer or its treatment. Pain may be caused by tumors pressing on nerves, bones, or organs, by tissue damage from surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy, or by treatment-related complications such as neuropathy or mucositis. Cancer pain can be acute or chronic, constant or intermittent, and mild to severe. It affects an estimated 55 to 66 percent of cancer patients and up to 90 percent of those with advanced disease. Effective pain management is a critical component of cancer care, as uncontrolled pain significantly impacts quality of life, functional ability, mood, and even treatment outcomes. A specialized palliative pain approach focuses on maximizing comfort while supporting the patient through all stages of their cancer journey.
Persistent aching, sharp, or deep pain at the tumor site or in areas affected by cancer treatment
Burning, tingling, or shooting pain caused by chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy or nerve compression
Bone pain, often described as a deep, constant ache that worsens with movement or at night
Breakthrough pain episodes, sudden flares of severe pain that occur despite ongoing pain medication
What Causes Cancer-Related Pain?
Cancer-related pain can arise from multiple sources related to both the disease and its treatment. Contributing factors include:
- Tumor compression: Tumors pressing on nerves, bones, organs, or other tissues causing direct pain
- Bone involvement: Cancer that has spread to bones (metastases) causing deep, aching skeletal pain
- Nerve invasion or damage: Cancer infiltrating peripheral nerves leading to neuropathic pain, burning, or numbness
- Surgery-related pain: Post-surgical pain from cancer operations, including nerve damage and scar tissue formation
- Chemotherapy-induced neuropathy: Peripheral nerve damage from chemotherapy drugs causing tingling, burning, or shooting pain
- Radiation effects: Tissue damage, fibrosis, or nerve injury resulting from radiation therapy
- Treatment-related inflammation: Mucositis, skin reactions, and other inflammatory responses to cancer treatments
Treatment Options for Cancer-Related Pain
Silver Pain Centre provides specialized palliative pain management for cancer patients. Our team works collaboratively with your oncology care team to develop a comprehensive pain management plan that complements your cancer treatment.
Medication management and optimization: Expert titration of opioid and non-opioid analgesics, adjuvant medications, and breakthrough pain treatments tailored to your specific cancer pain profile
Nerve block procedures: Targeted injections to block pain signals from specific nerves affected by tumor compression or treatment-related damage
Neurolytic blocks: Specialized procedures using chemical agents to provide long-lasting relief for severe cancer pain by interrupting specific pain pathways
Intrathecal drug delivery: Implantable pump systems that deliver pain medication directly to the spinal fluid for patients requiring continuous, high-level pain control
Radiofrequency ablation: Heat-based treatment to interrupt pain signals from nerves affected by bone metastases or other cancer-related pain generators
Vertebral augmentation: Minimally invasive procedures to stabilize vertebral compression fractures caused by bone metastases and reduce associated pain
Palliative care coordination: Comprehensive approach integrating pain management with supportive care to address the physical, emotional, and practical needs of cancer patients
When to Seek Palliative Pain Management
You should consult a pain specialist if you experience cancer pain that is not adequately controlled by your current medications, pain that requires escalating doses of opioids with diminishing effectiveness, side effects from pain medications that limit your ability to take adequate doses, new or worsening pain that may indicate disease progression or treatment complications, or pain that interferes with your ability to tolerate or continue cancer treatment. Specialized pain management can significantly improve quality of life at any stage of cancer care.
