Ankle & Foot Pain
(Plantar Fasciitis, Achilles Tendonitis)Ankle and foot pain can be fundamentally debilitating, as these structures bear your entire body weight with every step. Whether you are dealing with the sharp, stabbing heel pain of plantar fasciitis or the chronic stiffness of Achilles tendonitis, mobility issues quickly impact your work, exercise, and overall quality of life. At Silver Pain Centre, we provide OHIP-covered consultations and advanced interventional treatments to reduce inflammation, repair connective tissue, and get you back on your feet.
What is Ankle & Foot Pain?
Ankle and foot pain occurs when the complex network of 26 bones, 33 joints, and over 100 muscles, tendons, and ligaments becomes strained or damaged. This pain can range from a dull ache after a long day to sharp, localized sensations that make walking impossible.
Common symptoms include:
Sharp, stabbing pain in the heel, especially during your first steps in the morning.
Tenderness and swelling along the back of the heel or ankle.
"Burning" sensations on the bottom of the foot.
Stiffness in the ankle joint that limits your range of motion.
Increased pain after prolonged standing or intense physical activity.
Why Does Ankle & Foot Pain Occur?
Because the feet are subject to constant repetitive stress, they are highly susceptible to overuse injuries and inflammatory conditions. Common causes include:
-
Plantar Fasciitis: Inflammation of the thick band of tissue (fascia) that runs across the bottom of your foot and connects your heel bone to your toes.
-
Achilles Tendonitis: An overuse injury of the Achilles tendon, the band of tissue that connects calf muscles to the heel bone.
-
Arthritis: Wear and tear in the ankle or mid-foot joints causing chronic swelling and pain.
-
Morton’s Neuroma: A thickening of the tissue around one of the nerves leading to your toes, often causing a “pebble in the shoe” sensation.
-
Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome: Compression of the posterior tibial nerve, similar to Carpal Tunnel but in the ankle.
-
Bursitis: Inflammation of the fluid-filled sacs that cushion the ankle joint.
How We Diagnose & Treat at Silver Pain Centre
Our specialists utilize a comprehensive physical exam combined with advanced imaging if necessary to distinguish between ligament tears, nerve entrapment, and bone issues. Your personalized treatment plan may include:
Medication Optimization: Advanced topical or oral anti-inflammatories to manage pain without heavy systemic side effects.
Corticosteroid Injections: Precise, image-guided injections to provide rapid relief for acute inflammation in the heel or joints.
Nerve Blocks: Targeted relief for chronic neuropathic foot pain or tarsal tunnel syndrome.
Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA): Long-term relief for chronic joint pain in the ankle resistant to other treatments.
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP): Using your body’s own healing properties to support the recovery of chronic tendon or fascia tears.
Image-Guided Injections: Using ultrasound or fluoroscopy to ensure the medication reaches the exact source of the pain for maximum efficacy.
